Success + The Paradox of Standing Out

  Featured Case Study

The Trait That Keeps A Caribou Alive in the Wilderness is the Same Trait That Will KILL Your Business in Today's Economy

This is a catch-22 that could be savaging your company's prospects.

Greetings!

Growing up, people learn to 'fit in'.

In Australia, there is 'tall poppy syndrome', which states that anyone (any poppy) who stands out - or above the crowd - promptly gets their head lopped off. If beheading is the price for standing out, how many people do you think have the strength of character to become a 'tall poppy'?

Think about your business for a minute. Doing what comes naturally to us as individuals - not standing out - is death to a business. Not standing out from the competition is a recipe for mediocrity at best - and abject failure at worst.

In business we must do what comes unnaturally to us as individuals - proudly stand out and distinguish ourselves from our competitors. If your marketing looks just like everyone else's, you'll still get some business. Spend enough on advertising and you might even get more business than your competitors, but at what price? Have you looked at how expensive advertising is?

So can a business learn to make a habit of standing out? Those businesses that have a corporate culture ingrained with the attitude that it is 'out-standing' to stand out, often thrive. Is there a direct connection between OUTSTANDING businesses and STANDING OUT? You bet.

Herd Standout

Can this philosophy be learned and adopted by your team? Yes, if you are prepared to invest the time, money and effort required to make it happen.

Is it worth paying that price in the end? Absolutely. Not only will the business start creating great results, that success will also impact your staff, the office environment and the corporate culture.

People feel great working at a business that is a StandOut business. The collective attitude changes. There is a certain confidence and swagger people exhibit when they work at an OutStanding company. And confidence SELLS. The bottom line is: the bottom line improves.

It might actually be that 'fitting in' is costing you big time.

What are the most important areas in your business where building a standout culture could create excellence? Standout profits?

Unlike an antelope on the Serengeti Plains, where standing out is a recipe for getting 'selected' as dinner for a predator. businesses MUST stand out to thrive. Rather than becoming lunch for a lion, an OUTSTANDING BUSINESS will be the one to survive in a dangerous economy.

Impressions Matter - Be an Outstanding Company

It is critical to present your business in the best light possible - today more than ever! One way this can happen is to constantly course correct and improve the skills of your staff. But this only happens with concerted effort and regular training.

Give them access to opportunities to grow. Implement a program with the stated goal of improving your company's points of contact, both public and within your business. This alone will make people aware of the concept, which is half the battle.

When is the best time to start? What do you think?

Why was a link to this Dutch store sent to me by THREE different friends?

HEMA logo

It is not common for busy and bright people to pass along web links - unless they are in some way very cool or unusual. I had never heard of HEMA, which is a Dutch chain of stores, but three people sent me a link to this site.

Why? Because the content (though it first appears very pedestrian) is engaging and creative.

HEMA took a risk with this type of web page. And as a result they created a great deal of awareness of their brand - all over the world. Great return on the investment of building the page, don't you think?

Click the link below to see what the fuss is about. Be patient once you've clicked, too!

RIP Grandma- 1904 - 2009
Edel Brown 105 1/2 year life!

Edel Brown - Grandma

After a long full life, my Grandmother passed away on August 1st, 2009. Living for that long is an accomplishment on it's own, but Grandma was unique. She was one of the most accepting and dedicated people I've known.

I was granted the honor of presiding at her graveside service. It was an emotional and positive celebration of her life. What a ride she had!

Sharp eyes will note that the hat she is wearing in the two photos above is the SAME HAT - 81 YEARS APART. It was part of a costume from her Norwegian dancing group in 1928!

Grandma was one who was always up for an Adventure. I took her for a memorable motorcycle ride on her 95th birthday. She rode pillion wearing her hand knit slippers. Her only complaint (to my mother afterwards) was, "We could have gone on a much longer ride - maybe up the mountain!"

Earlier this year, I had taken her out on Grouse Mountain to ride the SnoLimo Down the ski hills with my 9 year old daughter Indigo. CTV news showed up to cover the story as Grandma was the oldest person to ever come down Grouse Mountain.

The link below provides more details about this unique occasion.
